About Me

CURRENT MISSION

See more, love more, think more, dream more. And always eat good food.

ABOUT ME

I'm currently living in the Northwest Territories, in Canada. I moved here after living and working in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Maybe it was my subconscious guilt for spending too many weekends on white, sandy beaches that brought me North of the 60th parallel, but, really, I love it here. It's a nice reminder that your most meaningful travels can happen at home.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm really into listening. I think listening is just as active as speaking, and I like living with the constant possibility of having my mind changed.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm new to CouchSurfing, in this form, but certainly not new to it in practice. I'm excited to share my home, and to get a glimpse into the worlds of others.

Interests

Reading; traveling; human rights; cheese; political theory; theatre; camping; long walks on the beach (for serious!); wine; eating with my hands; long-winded philosophical discussions; music (playing, making, listening); pick-up games of soccer; languages; writing; long bus rides.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies - yes.

Music - yes.

Books - yes.

I'll elaborate on this, but it's too overwhelming a question right now.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hard question, but a favourite memory is this one: I was working for an organization that supported early childhood education in Zanzibar, Tanzania. I did everything from political science-y reports and proposals to making puppets with teachers to playing with kids (yeah. tough job). One day, my co-worker (an amazing woman named Bi Sultana) told me she was doing a workshop with teachers on hygiene and asked if I had any ideas.

I remembered a song from my childhood that went something like this: "If you wake up in the morning, quarter to one, and you want to have a little fun, you brush your teeth, ch ch ch ch. ch ch ch ch....[and so on.]" It's a ridiculous, Saturday-morning-Canadian-tv kind of song, but I got the go-ahead, so I taught the teachers the song. A few months later, I was in a tiny, rural village, hanging out with some co-workers, and I heard a bunch of children in a school house singing this song. It was hilarious, ridiculous, and delightful.
