About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To avoid drudgery and tedium at all costs

ABOUT ME

I write a column for British newspaper The Independent, features for other newspapers and mags, and I'm making tentative steps towards writing a book or 3. I have a band called The Free French, and play in another band with the secret alias "Double G and the Traitorous 3". I live in South London, my girlfriend lives in North London, it takes 75 minutes from door to door. London's big, you see.

PHILOSOPHY

Don't take two bottles into the shower when you can just Wash'n'Go.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

One most pleasant hosting experience, so far.

Interests

Writing constantly until something interesting appears on the page, back street pubs, the thrill of the mundane.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music? From the smooth MOR sounds of Steely Dan to obscure French progressive rock, and lots of things in between: Captain Beefheart, Joni Mitchell, Ivor Cutler, Hall & Oates, Momus, The Fall, Todd Rundgren, Prefab Sprout, Scritti Politti, Ultra Bra, Bogshed, Marvin Gaye.

Books? A Confederacy Of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. The Scheme for Full Employment by Magnus Mills. Will Self's Feeding Frenzy. Delia Smith's Book of Cakes.

Movies? I can't sit still for long enough. Woody Allen.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I played a rowdy, unlistenable song called "Factor Alpha" to 2,000 men, women and children at Buchlov Castle in the Czech Republic as the sun set behind a nearby mountain and a fellow band member climbed a tree mid-song and promptly fell out of it.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to play the musical saw. I'd like to learn the secret of living for ever, or at least until I'm fed up and have had enough.
