About Me

Hi, I’m Riaan! Originally from Namibia, I’ve been living in Cape Town, South Africa, for the past eight years. I work as an Engineering Project Manager, focusing on artificial intelligence, software development, and business improvement. While I enjoy the tech world, my true passion lies in exploring the outdoors—whether it's mountain biking, hiking, or camping under the stars.

I love meeting new people, exchanging stories, and learning about different cultures. My travels have taken me to some incredible places, and I believe that the best way to experience a country is through its people. That’s why I love Couchsurfing—it’s about meaningful connections.

I’m currently preparing for an exciting trip to Japan in April 2025 with my girlfriend, Marali. This will be her first international trip, and we’re both eager to dive into Japanese culture, explore nature, and experience life beyond the typical tourist spots. We’ll be spending a few days in the mountains of Shizuoka and would love to connect with locals who can share their insights and traditions.

Beyond travel, I have a deep appreciation for music (though Marali is the real musician—she plays piano beautifully), good food, and great conversations. Whether it’s swapping travel stories over a meal or going on an impromptu outdoor adventure, I’m always up for new experiences.

Looking forward to meeting fellow travelers, sharing some South African culture, and making lasting memories along the way!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I believe the best way to experience a place is through its people. Couchsurfing allows me to connect with locals, share stories, and explore cultures beyond the typical tourist path.

This year, my partner Marali and I are traveling to Japan (April 2025), and we’re especially excited to experience local life in Shizuoka. We’d love to meet hosts who can share their insights and traditions.

In the future, I hope to give back by hosting travelers in South Africa and exchanging cultures from both sides of the world!

Teach, Learn, Share

I love learning about different cultures, traditions, and ways of life—it's one of the biggest reasons I travel. In return, I’m happy to share insights about South Africa and Namibia, from daily life to unique customs and history.

I can also teach some basic Afrikaans phrases, exchange travel stories, or help with anything tech-related. Working in AI and software development, I’m always happy to chat about technology, help troubleshoot a device, or even introduce you to some cool AI tools.

Most of all, I enjoy meaningful conversations and the chance to see the world from a different perspective.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love exchanging stories and experiences, whether about travel, culture, or life in South Africa. I can share insights about my home country, introduce you to some Afrikaans phrases, and even cook a traditional South African meal.

If you enjoy outdoor adventures, we’ll definitely have something to talk about—I’m into mountain biking, hiking, and camping. My girlfriend, Marali, is also a talented pianist, so if there’s a piano around, you might even get a mini performance!

Most of all, I bring curiosity, respect, and a willingness to learn from my hosts while sharing a bit of my world in return.
