About Me

Hey everyone, my name is Richard and I currently work as an English language assistant in Bordeaux, France. I love to travel (especially on a budget) and am trying to make the most of my year in France by seeing all that Europe can offer. I lived in Japan until I was 10 but call Virginia Beach home, and Williamsburg my home away from home because that's where my university is. Fun fact: I don't know how to ride a bike because my first time on a bike I was attacked by crows and it ruined the experience for me.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love meeting new people, and especially when you travel I think it's great to meet people who are actually from where you're visiting. I think couchsurfing combines those two things, and all of my friends who have done it have had great experiences.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favorite book of all time is As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner (fun fact, it's also the only William Faulkner novel I've ever read). I love movies and spend most of my free time watching them or looking them up on Wikipedia. A tentative list of my favorites: number one goes to Lost In Translation because it's amazing, and Cold Mountain, Precious, Doubt, and Her are pretty high up there too. I also love Bridesmaids, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, This Is 40, and Anchorman. I like all types of music and typically don't leave the house without my headphones in. Always looking for more tunes so if you have a playlist you want to share, I'm your guy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was six years old I climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan. It was probably one of the most miserable days of my life at the time - waking up at 4 AM to hike up a mountain through rain and freezing wind was more than my chubby younger self could handle - but I'm stil glad that I did it.

What I Can Share with Hosts

My sense of humor, stories about the cooky French teenagers I teach, and my height if the host needs help reaching something on a high surface.
