I would rather know one individual well than know a little about a lot of people. Its also a better way to learn about a country. Hostels are good but you don't often get to know people too well and the conversation can be very similar each time. Don't get me wrong you can meet a lot of interesting people no matter how you travel. Also I'm going be honest its also cheaper and means i can do what i love for longer
