To find a path that means when I look back from the end I can say that I made a difference, there was more laughter than sadness, more joys than regrets, that I lived as fully as I could, always exploring.
Passionate about beer, wine, food, art and music. Don't ask me about sports. Avid blogger and amateur photographer. Engineer by day, geek all the time! Recently immigrated to Melbourne from Johannesburg. Nothing better than sitting around with good friends and good drink talking nonsense until the sun comes up.
I'm currently undergoing a crisis of self and struggling to figure out how I want to live my life, especially when it comes to work/life balance.
Because I know how frustrating it is to never be able to contact anyone or find anyone at events: 0499728710, firstname.lastname@example.org, http://www.facebook.com/#!/rncmarques (yes, look how paranoid I am about privacy!)
"Hold me fast, hold me fast
Cos I'm a hopeless wanderer
I will learn, I will learn
To love the skies I'm under"
- Hopeless Wanderer, Mumford and Sons
Live broadly, experience everything, give anything a go and just have fun doing it. Quotes always strike a chord with me so here are the ones that resonate the most:
"The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone else when we're uncool." - Almost Famous
"âZffff...what was that, sir? That was your life. Can I get another one? No, sorry.â - Basil Fawlty
"One's real life is often the life that one does not lead" - Oscar Wilde
âTwenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.â - Mark Twain
"For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again." - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
And my favourite poem in the world is "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost
The following blog post written by a palliative care nurse changed my entire outlook on life, I share it as often as possible. http://www.inspirationandchai.com/Regrets-of-the-Dying.html
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Randomly and chaotically. Well, not really anymore since I have settled in to Melbourne now and have an address! I enjoy going to as many and as diverse a range of events as possible. I enjoy getting to meet people from cultures that I know little about.
Joined a few months ago now. Amazing experience so far. Melbourne has such a great CS culture going on. Really ensures you are never alone or in bed early! When people ask me if I'm lonely or homesick for my friends I can honestly say that I miss them, but have met an amazing group of people here, and they have made all the difference.
Beer, wine, food, coffee, blogging, photography, travel, art, reading, technology, science, music made by real instruments and talented people.
Music, Movies, and Books
Far, far, far too many to name. Demolish books and movies, soft spot for sci-fi and fantasy but love a good drama and clever comedy (the darker the better). Music, generally hard rock/metal but also classical, mainstream rock and alternative. Melbourne is starting to get me into folksy stuff too! Echuca introduced me to the blues.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The brutality of nature up close while watching Thomsons Gazelle try to cross the Mara river in the Masai Mara, Kenya. Was cheering for the crocs at first but then it became a bit real when the drowning, falling, jaws and desperation started...WOW!
Teach, Learn, Share
Teach - beer tasting and appreciation. Lots of geeky electrical engineering stuff if you want! Basics of digital photography.
Learn - want to learn about Melbourne: history, culture, best places for coffee, all of it! Want to learn Italian and how to Swing dance (with my two left feet).
Share - time, a meal, a drink, a chat.
