About Me

ABOUT ME

I just started a brand new materials and biotech startup, WetSpark Innovations, LLC. I'm REALLY ridiculously excited, so if I host you, or you host me, expect some science and "oh yeah, we just did [something awesome] in the lab this week" conversation.

I'm also a blacksmith, machinist, and a bit of a stargazer. I studied biology at Old Dominion University, but I took time to take classes in all sorts of things, from Ground Vehicle Aerodynamics to Astrophysics. And ballroom dance!

Interests

I beat the living daylights out of red-hot steel until it turns into something pretty.

:D

I also represent the Disabled before the Social Security Administration. I find this rewarding, but stressful.

Hence the beating of the living daylights out of the steel of red-hotness. Very good stress relief.

I also enjoy dabbling in all things outdoorsy and science-related. Sort of a survivalist, but not in the m-16's in the woods sense, more the whole my-dad-was-a-survival-instructor sense. I love to take a walk in the woods somewhere new and find something to eat, growing along the way.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few years ago I saw my first gray fox running across my front yard. I'd never seen one before. She stopped, looked at me, and just for a split second "ah, I see you" - recognition. That was powerful.

I developed a metamaterial about 18 months ago. I applied it to some fabric, and tested it out at my gun club. A .45ACP bullet hit the fabric, and stopped. It didn't bounce off, and barely deformed. The awe-inspiring moment? Hearing the bullet spin down from close to 45,000 rpm inside the plastic sleeve I stuck the fabric in to hold it in place on the target. Talk about kinetic energy!
