Why I’m on Couchsurfing
There’s always something special about the friends one makes while traveling. The limited nature of our contact, the physical and psychological vulnerability of the traveler and the relative security of the host make for an interesting dynamic.
When I’m the host, I see my familiar settings anew. The coffee shop down the street becomes the last residence of a resistance organizer, the abandoned railway line nearby ceases to be a jogging route becomes once again a place of childlike-wonder and excitement when I bring a guest there. Art acquires new meaning through the lens of a foreigner. My home becomes a refuge.
When I’m the guest, I nervously stand outside your inbox/home/mind waiting to be let in. The excitement of novelty and the low-level anxiety of travel mix into a heady brew. But I crave grounding in the comfort that a local feels. I don’t like my excitement all wild and thrashing in space. I crave an understanding of the place of the people - at least one person who lives there - from which to thrash out. I don’t want to get drunk among strangers, I want to get drunk with a new friend. I want to feel like I’m pulling them out of their everyday - gently, of course ;) - and pushing myself into it.
