About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to keep exploring and learning, and to do no harm (hopefully even a bit of good)

ABOUT ME

Rob is ready for the apolcalypse. He can build a shelter, make a meal, and protect himself with nothing but the things he can find in the woods.

I (Tonya) will be the one huddling next to him reading a book and providing moral support. :-)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Host (primarily) and surf (occasionally). We enjoy sharing our home with travelers and I was lucky enough to have a lovely woman in Brussels offer me use of her apartment (in her absence) for my 40th birthday. What an amazing gesture of kindness and trust.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Prior to joining CouchSurfing, we've couchsurfed with friends of friends and have hosted many friends of friends, including itinerant snowboarders and fishermen. We now host and surf occasionally.

Interests

Rob: fishing, the outdoors, the mountains, fixing things, fishing. And fishing.

Tonya: snowboarding (though I don't go as much these days), reading, writing, the ocean, the mountains, history.

Both of us: helping people (in big and small ways), traveling, meeting strangers, family, friends, our dogs, movies, music, good food and drink. Parenting the most hilarious and complicated person we know--our nineteen year-old daughter.

Music, Movies, and Books

Among the best things in life: short stories by John Cheever, Edward P Jones, and Richard Yates.

We both love music and grew up going to tons of shows and festivals. Rob loves jam bands, blues, funk, folk, reggae, and thrash metal (don't know how that last one quite fits in, but it does). I grew up with punk, new wave, and goth so have a special place in my heart for them, though these days I love lots of different types of music. My ipod is one of my best friends.

We both love to watch movies of all types from silly comedies to action movies to thought-provoking indies. We also seriously appreciate a quality zombie flick (but the original is still the best--Romero's 1968 Night of the Living Dead). We don't watch much TV but love British comedies: Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Yes, Minister, Peep Show.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Learning the meaning of life from a small group of survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide while I taught them English in Kigali. Not a fair trade, really.

Raising our daughter.

Teach, Learn, Share

Rob can teach you how to fish, how to fix a timing belt on your car, how to tile a bathroom, how to cook, and how to survive that aforementioned apocalypse.

My skills are much less useful, though I make a mean Ginger Orchid.
