Overview
About Me
I was born in Austria but spent much of my life in America, where I got my PhD in Physics. And in September I got married! We quit our jobs and sold our things and are doing a sort of open-ended honeymoon by traveling the world. My wife's profile (it still feels weird to say wife) is at https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/colleenwild
We've done a bit of traveling, mostly in Europe, the US, and Latin America, but that is changing quite quickly with this trip. We prefer to stay out of the big cities and tourist traps and would much rather just experience the culture and life of a place by meeting people and getting lost.
I'm very easygoing and relaxed about most things in life, and like to think of myself as genuine and friendly. I tend to start out as the quiet one in social situations, but once you get me talking I can really open up. I'm happy to discuss all sorts of subjects late into the night - from the meaning of life to the possibilities in a piece of rope.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
One of the many things that traveling has taught me is that the quality of an experience in a new place is largely determined by the interactions with people one meets there. And hotels are not really conducive to meeting people who know the area.
Interests
My interests can be summarized by the desire to learn and experience new things, especially in the outdoors. To that end, I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, mountaineering, scuba diving, and have even taken a hang-gliding course.
Apart from the outdoors, I play violin (I've been trained classically, but have dabbled in folk and improv), I like to bake, brew beer, read, draw, or fix/build things (I like to work with my hands).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
My three-week trek around Mt. Manaslu in Nepal is definitely among my most amazing experiences.
Teach, Learn, Share
I'll be happy to teach some basic bread baking, outdoor survival skills, and of course will happily go into long conversations on the mysteries of physics. But only if you're interested, so don't let that scare you. :)
