About Me

Hi I'm Rory, how's it going? As you can see from my information I am a farmer and I live in Lincolnshire in a really rural part of England. I work for my dad on my family's farm and although I love my job and the natural world I also love to take the opportunity to travel when things are quiet. I always thought I wanted to be a philosophy academic whilst I was studying but once I got into working in the countryside it was obvious to me that I could never be happy living in a city again! Above all else I am passionate about wildlife and conservation and every day I am motivated by the fact that every decision that I make has a practical affect on the natural world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As you can see I'm pretty new to couchsurfing. I have done it a couple of times but only as the guest of a friend, and after that I decided to get a profile myself. I feel that couchsurfing is kind of like hitchhiking...but with your home. Ok a slightly tenuous analogy but bear with me. Basically its about trust and about the ability to trust strangers which strikes me as a beautiful thing and it is something that I want to be a part of!

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a great lover of many kinds of literature and philosophy, from Shakespeare and Ted Hughes to Wittgenstein and Nietzsche. It has also been a great pleasure through learning Spanish to be able to start reading literature in Spanish, such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Neruda and Borges.

I don't watch a huge amount of movies but I guess that films like Memento, Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner are amongst my favorites.

When it comes to music my real nerdy self comes through. I am a real lover of classical music and regularly go to concerts and to the opera. I am also interested in the music of Jazz musicians such as Bill Evans and electronic musicians like Jon Hopkins.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Run away from a bear in the Bolivian rainforest in a thunderstorm...kind of a long story

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm not sure I really understand this question but I guess I could teach people about modern conventional agriculture...if that's the kind of thing that would interest someone. I would love to learn about the experiences that other people have had in different countries and in return I could share the experiences that I have had whilst traveling...that seems like a fair trade!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Sort of feel like I've just answered this question but I suppose my knowledge of modern day agriculture. I usually find that I'm considered the bad guy in most debates concerning pesticide use and gm crops but hey at least hear me out! Also my passion for literature, philosophy the arts and above all wildlife conservation.
