About Me

CURRENT MISSION
To get back into producing more Art. To meet more people.

ABOUT ME

I've managed to travel and live in a wide range of countries. I lived in Bolivia for 10 yrs with my 2 children and when we finally left South America in 1997 I took them on a year's travel . That was great fun although we didn't find a Utopia so we settled back in Essex conveniently if reluctantly.
Now my son and daughter are both away working, dancing, doing sport and travelling so I'm 'free' to migrate to warmer lands in the English winter-time.

PHILOSOPHY

Theravada Buddhism provides the philosophy that makes most sense to me. It's full of wisdom; looking at the way life 'is', rather than the way life 'should be', investigating how our minds work. Theravada is found in Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka as well as monasteries elsewhere. I try to keep my mind open and face life's uncertainties without attaching to vague props including all sorts of New Age-isms.
(If you find yourself in a rut, jump out of it. Travelling is just one way I know of, to do that. Other ways include, pushing yourself to do something that takes some effort and perseverance.)
I like to keep a scientific, experimental outlook and to enjoy the subtle nuances of life.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm fairly new to CS but think it's a great way to meet other open-minded people while wandering in other countries. I hope to host more CS guests this summer.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've made a start by couchsurfing in Kerala. I enjoyed Wwoofing in Oz and NZ so that is similar in some ways. I try to behave well as a guest.

Interests

One of my main interests is wildlife and conservation.
I like healthy food and have been baking sourdough bread for 30 years since learning how to make it in Holland.
I draw and paint, not abstract though.
I like walking and trekking, sometimes horse riding.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I love Flamenco, especially the contemporary fusion which is headed by Enrique Morente, Paco de Lucia, also Vicente Amigo, El Pele, Dorantes, Ray Heredia, etc. I also listen to some world music (not all!) and classical.
Films: Avatar 3D, Life of Brian; French and Spanish films, wildlife and other documentaries
Books: God of Small Things, Midnight's Children, 100 Years of Solitude, auto/biographies

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Wandered around in the remote rainforest realising that all these weird and wonderful creatures were living perfectly happily without caring in the slightest whether humans even existed. We humans think we are so important!
Likewise seeing dolphins playing in the ocean, going snorkelling on a coral reef (Zanzibar), and more such unforgettable experiences.

Teach, Learn, Share

I like teaching English and Spanish to anyone wishing to learn, and art and sourdough bread making.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Well, conversation is a good start, and some cooking together.

Afghanistan, Australia, Bolivia, Comoros, France, Greece, India, Italy, Jersey, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Spain, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, United Kingdom
