About Me

CURRENT MISSION

We are currently on a year-long fundraising bicycle tour of the British Isles.

ABOUT ME

My husband and I are travelling by bicycle between the four RNLI stations at the outermost reaches of the British Isles. So far we have been to Valentia Island in County Kerry, Ireland, and are currently heading through Northern Ireland towards the Shetlands. After this, we will travel to Lowesoft (Suffolk) and St Helens (Scilly Isles) before completing the trip back where we left off in Bath. The trip is in memory of my father, John Carney, raising money for the RNLI and the Ocean Youth Trust, and will take us many more than the predicted 4000 miles over the course of about a year.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We have packed in our jobs and our homes in order to take this trip, so I am conscious that currently I will be gaining a lot from couchsurfing and giving back only tales from the road... In time, we hope to have a place of our own in the countryside where we will be able to host the many kind people who have already assisted us on our journey through Wales and Ireland so far.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None as of yet, but we have heard good things from pals.

Interests

Well, I taught Religious Education in an inner city school for a couple of years and more recently set up an education charity called Jamie's Farm in Bath, UK. So anything on the subject of animals or children is a good start, and is usually a segway for many other interesting conversations.

Music, Movies, and Books

I currently have Ulysseys on the old Kindle, that well known 'biographical study' of Dublin, where we are currently passing through. However, it is frying my tiny brain, and Homer is not providing too much relief as I punctuate my reading with spurts of his 'The Odyssey'. But our trip is quite epic so clearly I needed to tackle some epic read before you die texts. However, I enjoy almost just as much reading 'the gruffalo' on loop for my dear nephew and niece. 'The Week' often sits in our panniers largely dogear'd and unread, as it provides a shorthand version of the news, hopefully cutting out the 20 page spread version of news such as (for example) that of the royal baby's arrival.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

i'm quite a dabhand at lambing a ewe these days. does that count? maybe this should go in the 'couchsurfing university' section. It can stay here whilst I scrape that barrel. Hang on! We've cycled 1500 miles to Ireland, and through the direst winter for some time! We saw many amazing things along the way, and stayed with qa 93 year old cycle tourer. I am hoping our couchsurfing experience will compare...
