Svalbard honeymoon 2016
Richard is a rivethead, beerist, cyclist, wanna-be polyglot, software developer, vegan from Victoria, Canada. Previously lived in Ottawa, spent three months living in Romania on a co-op term, and now I live in Vancouver.
: Someone who listens to noisy, bangy, electronic music and wears cargo pants. See image.
: I really like beer. Here's a list of my favourite beers: http://www.ratebeer.com/user/56768/ratings/1/4/
: If you speak or are learning any of the languages that I am, please practice them with me!
: I don't use anything that comes from animals. Includes meat, dairy, eggs, honey, leather, or wool. If you are my host, please do not be offended if I decline food you offer because of this! I will not be offended if you offer it. If you offer me vegan food (even just coffee) I will gladly accept it :) I usually don't bring this up, but given how integral eating tends to be with CouchSurfing, I feel that it is important to make it clear. I'm really easy going about it though :)
Lindsey is a Japanese-English translator and part-time software developer. She loves minimal synth, coldwave, new wave, industrial, batcave, goth, and post-punk music. Also enjoys paper collage, reading (especially sci-fi/dystopian books), live music, singing, learning languages (so far Japanese and some German & Mandarin), wandering and exploring, travelling, and watching movies where Nicholas Cage gets really ragey.
Veganism: I don't believe that animals can give consent for me to take things from them. I also asked myself if I had to kill animals myself in order to consume them, would I be able to do so? I strongly feel that I couldn't bring myself to do it, so it is hypocritical of me to consume them. I'm really not pushy about this at all though, and we will only talk about it if you bring it up, and I am comfortable talking about it :)
Cycling: I believe getting around by bicycle is the best mode of transportation. I will even cycle in Canada's -30C winters, as long as the roads are clear :). That said, Toronto is not a very cyclist friendly city. I've never seen a place that has so few bike lanes.
Other: I am an easy-going, independent traveller. I'm somewhat shy, and quite introverted (in that I need plenty of time to myself to recharge), but I really enjoy the interaction that Couchsurfing brings. If I am with a host that is busy I am quite capable of entertaining myself :)
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
As of December 2012, I have hosted 30 couchsurfers for a total of 102 days; surfed with 8 hosts for a total of 32 days; and travelled with 8 couchsurfers for a total of 48 days. CouchSurfing is totally awesome.
My current hosting-to-surfing ratio: 3.12:1
Computers: computer science, usability, open source software, web development
Languages: German, Norwegian, Icelandic, Russian, Old Norse, Finnish, Romanian. Some of my life goals are to be able to read the Old Norse sagas in the original text, and the Finnish Kalevala in the original text.
Beer: Abbey dubbels, doppelbocks, hefeweizen, quadrupels, tripels, barley wine and schwarzbier are my favourite styles. Usually they come from Belgium and Germany, but I've had some absolutely amazing beer from Norway and Denmark, as well as Québec and the USA.
Places: Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, Hungary, Romania, Finland, Baltics, Russia, Armenia, Moldova and other ex-CIS states, Mongolia, Namibia (I'm really interested in everywhere. These are just places I'm more interested in than others :)
Other: Tea and coffee (not the the same extent as beer), veganism, cycling, skiing, hiking, photography (see my photos)
Music, Movies, and Books
Favourite genres: industrial, EBM, neofolk, scandinavian folk, medieval, darkwave, gothic, folk metal, and some klezmer, post-rock and black metal.
Favourite bands: Rome, :Of the Wand and the Moon:, Garmarna, Valravn, Welle:Erdball, Tenhi, Covenant, Gåte, Einstürzende Neubauten, Laibach, In Strict Confidence, Janus, Snog, Heimataerde. See more on my last.fm profile.
Movies: Blade Runner, Pi, Elling, Dark City, Road Warrior, Goodbye Lenin!, 12 Monkeys, The Seventh Seal, Bis ans Ende der Welt, Börn náttúrunnar, Englar alheimsins (and most other Icelandic cinema). I also really enjoy some TV series, including Farscape, Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Father Ted, the IT Crowd, and Star Trek (TOS, TNG and DS9).
Authors: Neal Stephenson, Douglas Coupland, Günter Grass, Philip K. Dick. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, but I don't like much other fantasy. I also read a lot of non-fiction, in particular about international conflicts, oppressive governments and history.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I got to see the interior of a fortified saxon church in Romania. It's not even open to the public, and I got to climb up into the defensive bell tower :)
Haven't done yet, but I want to go to Svalbard twice: Once during the summer solstice, and again during the winter solstice.
I also really want to go to Nagorny-Karabakh.
Teach, Learn, Share
I would like to learn more about photography!
I can generally teach a bit about computers. I can also show you a bit of my cooking skills (especially if I am hosting - might be a little difficult as a surfer).
I will also share with you my crazy music collection :)
What I Can Share with Hosts
-Can do some basic language instruction in Icelandic, Japanese, and German!
-Lindsey loves vegan baking - if you love baked good I'd be happy to make some :)
