About Me
CURRENT MISSION
to travel to interesting places around Latin America, learn Spanish, make new friends and try new things
ABOUT ME
I'm 27 years old and I'm from Perth in Australia. I have lived in Western Australia for most of my life though I spent 5 years in Switzerland when I was a kid. After finishing uni I worked as an engineer in Australia for 4 years until I decided to take a year off to travel through Latin America.
On my travels I am enjoying meeting other people, trying out different activities like surfing, diving, rafting and hiking and trying the night life in each place. I am also learning Spanish on the way. I am also keen on trying new food though I am vegetarian which can make it interesting in South America!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
Surfed one time so far in Chile, hoping to do more in South America!
Interests
Learning languages is one of the things I really like. After forgetting German when I left Switzerland I decided to start relearning it as an adult about 6 years ago. I've got it mostly figured out now (though it's still not quite fluent). For the last 2 years I've been doing Spanish and in the future I'd like to give another latin language a go (maybe Portugese).
In terms of sports I really like snowboarding and diving (I've got my advanced course coming up in a couple of weeks). I also did my first surfing lesson the other day and I'm looking forward to doing some more when scenery permits. On this trip I've also got in to hiking a bit (doing the Inca Trail in Peru and W trek in Torres del Paine, Chile) and I'm looking forward to doing some more in Argentina, Brazil and hopefully Venezuela next year.
I also quite like cooking. I'm vegetarian and I was living on my own for 18 months so I cooked for myself most nights and learnt how to make a lot of different dishes this way.
Like every couchsurfer I really like travelling too. Over the last five years I've visited Europe a few times, India, Japan, South East Asia and I'm currently travelling through Latin America.
I've tried learning guitar on and off for a while but haven't got too far yet. One day...

Music, Movies, and Books
Since getting my Kindle earlier this year my reading has picked up a lot. Lately I've read all the Sherlock Holmes books, a bunch of books by Cormack McCarthy, a few by Ernest Hemingway (For Whom the Bell Tolls was my favourite), Les Miserables and the Open Veins of Latin America.
My favourite director is Christopher Nolan and I like almost all of his movies. I also like comedies like Shaun of the Dead, The Guard and Zombieland. I'm also big on a lot of Sci Fi movies. I also like quite a few non-English language movies like The Lives of Others, In A Better World, Elite Squad and City of God. Other favourites include Lock Stock and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
For music I like mainly indie rock, some metal and some electronic. My favourite bands are Tool, The Arcade Fire and The National. Lately I've been listening to The Naked and Famous, Sufjan Stevens and Of Monsters and Men.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The hiking in South America springs to mind, namely the Inca Trail and the W Trek in Torres del Paine - both spectacular!
Teach, Learn, Share
Aside from helping with languages (English and German) my main communicable skills are probably cooking vegetarian food and something to do with electronics.
The main thing I'm keen to learn at the moment is Spanish.
