About Me

CURRENT MISSION

ABOUT ME

I'm still in the process of becoming a person, so forgive if I don't leave a vivid description of myself, I'm fascinated with many things and like to learn what I can.

I've been in China for years and years and years, sitting in various spaces and wearing a few different hats: teacher, volunteer, shameless marketeer, translator, biscuit consultant (personal favourite).

I came with vague plans (to travel) and strong impulses (to learn) and have moved around a fair bit within this large country: from Harbin to Changchun then to Chengdu and finally (so far) Shanghai. In between I have travelled northeastsouth and west.

China is a place that dictates movement and engagement, I advise you to get on the road and find out for yourself what it's like.

I'm Chinese in my tastes (food and drink) but aim to be worldly (I'd like to think) in my outlook and philosophy.

Finding fruitful avenues for my curiosity is a very important part of my life.

I am a big tea-drinker - I'm not big, but do drink a lot of tea. If you're passing through or local, I'd more than like to share a cup or more.

PHILOSOPHY

"A good life is a process, not a state of being."

“A man wrapped up in himself is a very small thing indeed.”

“Remember you must live; remember you must die.”

“知足者常乐”

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosting, meeting and eating.

I can guide you around some local curiosities, just wait while I rediscover what they are . . .

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

yes positive. mostly.

Surfing is an entirely different experience to hosting, if you're involved and believe in the project I implore you to do both.

Interests

Reading, writing (scribbling really), sketching, eating, dancing, jesting, walking at night and looking around, cycling, sunny days and wafty clouds.

In another life I'd be a more committed flaneur.

Psychology, especially the writings of Carl Rogers and recently the works of Irving Yalom, particularly interested in existential psychology, the conundrums of "consciousness" and "self" merit an interest too.

The art of conversation and the limits of language. Weaning myself away from the notion that essential meaning can never be conveyed through language.

Volunteering - I volunteer in a local hospital and homeless relief centre. You should too, given chance.

Tea-minded.

Music, Movies, and Books

Radio
World service, public radio in the states, every single radio phone-in that I may have tuned into in the past.

In my opinion, Radio is to TV, what the bicycle is to the car.

Sounds
music with a voice or a beat and anything in between, lots of electrical sounds, folk, jazz, quirky bands or musicians that try to do different things or smell nice, I'm thinking Kate Bush right at this moment, soul, drum and bass always makes me smile and move, you surely don't want to know all the music I like?

Books

Faulkner - W.G. Sebald - Milan kundera - cormac mccarthy - Theodore zeldin

Orwell's socially active writings.

Camus broke open the gloomy british skies for me and philosophically I find a lot to admire in his writings.

Avid reader of "history from the below" and aural history like studs terkel.

what about you?
