About Me

The most important things in my life are family, friends, learning, and fun.

Family: Raised in South Carolina, I also have family in New England, (Old) England, and New Zealand. I recently became engaged to my best friend and best partner I could ever ask for. My life revolves around spending time and having fun with my future wife.

Friends: I am extremely close with a couple friends, but I enjoy making new connections in every city I visit. I am at heart an interest, but I value relationships with others, so when around other people, I do my best to spend time with and get to know others.

Learning: I will soon graduate from Davidson College, a small liberal arts school in Davidson, NC, USA. I am a mathematics major, and as my next step, I plan to pursue a PhD in theoretical computer science. As a liberal arts student, I enjoy discussing topics ranging from science to literature and religion.

Fun: For fun, I love being outside. Whether I am exploring a new place, playing ultimate Frisbee or soccer, or hiking, I will be happy when I'm active.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am young and love traveling (and as a student, I have a small budget). My vacations typically involve backpacking new trails or cycling across the country. For these trips, I often need a place to stay for a day or two before or after an outdoor adventure, and I usually bring good stories with me.

When visiting a new area, I also find the experience is much more complete when befriending people who know the area and are kind enough to provide a place to stay.

Interests

My favorite activities are those which involve the outdoors. I love backpacking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, and caving. My ideal vacation is visiting a new country and spending several weeks backpacking. To date, my favorite trail is of course the Appalachian Trail, which I grew up with in the Carolinas. After that, my favorite is the John Muir Trail (JMT) near Yosemite Valley, CA.

Music, Movies, and Books

For music, I primarily enjoy folk and bluegrass. My favorite band by far is the Avett Brothers. I also often listen to The Head & the Heart, Bon Iver, The Tallest Man on Earth, Band of Horses, Regina Spektor, Punch Brothers, Wailin' Jennys, and others. When I want something different, my secret favorite artist is Kid Cudi.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm going to cheat here, and describe something I am planning. This summer, my fiancee and I are planning to cycle across the USA, from Virginia to San Francisco.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I have an enthusiasm for cycling and hiking. I have spent a lot of time fixing bicycles, so I can lend a hand or advice for bicycle repair. I also spend much of my college career leading backpacking, canoeing, and cycling trips, so I know a lot about outdoor travel and education.

I love discussing science and literature.

I am glad to buy a kind host a meal and a few drinks at a local restaurant.
