About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel Canada and meet interesting people along the way

ABOUT ME

My name is Sam Hodder. I am from a small rural locality called Brogo in the Bega Valley, far south coast, NSW Australia. I am 19 years old and have just departed on my first international trip to Canada. I am traveling with my Canadian friend Vicki, who I know from Australia. We are looking forward to meeting new people and spending time in the outdoors. I am in the final stages of a traineeship at an organization called 'The Crossing Land Education Centre' in Bermagui NSW. There I spend time leading groups of teens and adults in outdoor activities (hiking, canoeing, cycling) and work on the property, learning about sustainable living. Also, I work for National Parks doing Koala surveys. In my spare time I play club cricket and soccer. Growing up in Brogo, Ive helped my family and have had work building, fencing and landscaping. I spend a lot of time outdoors and am very interested in trees, plants and wild food. * My messages may have very poor spelling and grammar because I am dyslexic *

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am new to couchsurfing. But have met many international people through my work and have heard great things about the network. While on my travels in Canada I will use the website for the first time.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None yet! Only informal.

Interests

The outdoors; hiking, canooeing, navigating, trees, plants, food, animals. Sports: cricket, soccer, rugby. Beer (I've just found my taste for dark beers (sump oil)). Building especially with natural materials like work with timber, earth building and rock walls. Fixing things and making things in general.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Historical action movies. Game of Thrones.
Music: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, U2, ACDC, Midnight Oil, Neil Young,
I enjoy the odd flick through a newspaper.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A sea to snow journey with 'The Crossing Land Education Centre'. Travelling from the coast at Wallaga Lake to the summit of Mt Jagungal in NSW Australia. It was a 10 day trip canooeing, cycling and hiking through the wilderness with 10 other people.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach/Share: Outdoor skills in hiking, canooeing, navigation, species identification, wild foods, camping, natural systems/ecosystems. Building (timber, stone, earth) and property skills in general. Sports skills and coaching: soccer, cricket.
Learn: I'd love to spend some time in the Canadian outdoors moose hunting. Anything in the outdoors (since the Canadian wilderness will be new to me).
