About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring the rare silences and natural environments of New York City

ABOUT ME

I like to couch-surf, and have been doing it for a long time before this website existed.

PHILOSOPHY

I've been out of my comfort zone so long that it's no longer comfortable.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like to put people up from time to time, and I like to travel and occasionally take advantage of other people's generosity as well. I first couchsurfed in the early 90s, finding the names of possible hosts by reading zines and finding writers in faroff parts of the USA. I wrote to people and found hosts. It worked, but not as well as the internet.

Later, I got to know great people through this website while living in Chile. I hosted a bunch of times and have traveled as a couchsurfer a couple times myself. I like getting to know people a little and I am comfortable sharing homes.

Interests

I like to rid bike, hula hoop, read, write, bake, take photos, and have serious conversations. I enjoy outdoor activities. When I use a car it's to go to remote places.

Music, Movies, and Books

I collect atlases. I have many books in English, mostly nonfiction. I'm happy to share. I like movies well enough, just don't often make time for them. I especially like classic nonfiction like Wealth of Nations and The Voyage of the Beagle but I also have a soft spot for the Muppets, funny movies and circuses.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After winning a silver star in the Peloponnesian War, I returned to my native Gondwanaland to rescue a threatened plaid slime mold from the planned development of hatching pads for Nazca aliens. The tyrant ruler of my nation exiled me for impertinence, leaving me to wander the world, a man alone, in search of adventure, standing up for all that is good and right. And occasionally laying down for all that is good and right, because you know, that's fun too.

Also: I biked across the US solo in 1992, then went to the Earth Summit in Rio, being the only person there who arrived daily by bicycle.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am happy to help teach English and Spanish or give tips on hula hooping, bicycle tricks and geography. I can also teach some cooking or baking if we have time.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can edit your manuscript, teach you how to pitch a radio story, or make you excellent pancakes. I am pretty good at fixing bicycles, troubleshooting mac computers and figuring out who is stalking you. I can write a haiku and julienne a carrot. I am a skilled financial investigator.
