Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
We began our CS adventure with a trip to Quebec and Ontario in the Fall of 2010, and surfed in Key West in Spring 2011! We've had the fortune of hosting several fascinating surfers and have met a handful of fellow adventurers who have become great friends as part of the Evansville, Indiana CouchSurfing community. Since then, we've lived in the Washington, DC area, and met some amazing surfers there as well. We've recently settled into a new place in Vermont, and are looking forward to hosting guests of the Green Mountains!
This began as Sarah's profile only, but evolved into our joint account, which seems to work best since we almost always travel and host together. Thus far, our apartment has hosted two Ohioans, a Missourian, a Texan, and an Idaho(an?), all of whom confirmed our hunch that CSers would be nothing short of intriguing. If every guest is as pleasant as the ones who do yoga in their host's apartment at sunup, we're ready for more!
We have to list only a few? Yikes! Ok...
Sarah: Nordic culture, French language, open source learning, nonprofit innovation and art activism.
Nick: Food science, etymology, relativity (as pertaining to physics), and the Socratic method.
(Are we nerds or what?)
Music, Movies, and Books
Sarah: Music - Cocteau Twins, Múm, amiina, Sigur Rós, Björk, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc.; Movies - any with the feisty, strong-willed Katharine Hepburn (The Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year); Books - poetry by Kevin Young and Wislawa Szymborska.
Nick: Music - Radiohead, A Tribe Called Quest, Daft Punk, etc.; Movies - Lawrence of Arabia, Pi, The Motorcycle Diaries; Books - Tolkien, Tolkien, and did we mention Tolkien?
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
During our 2013 trip to Iceland: 1) Climbed into a volcanic crater (which had a lake that Björk previously performed on a raft in); 2) Observed the continental divide between Europe and North America; 3) Witnessed the most stunning array of geysers, glaciers, and waterfalls!
Teach, Learn, Share
Sarah: I have an affection for the English language and am often asked to lend my editing skills (spelling, grammar) to those whose strong suit this is not, and would be happy to do the same for you.
Nick: able to offer one of the world's most diverse ranges of cooking skills (a product of growing up in a multicultural neighborhood near Chicago), and always ready to develop a 5-star worthy ethnic menu even with limited ingredients and on a budget!
Both: bartering offers welcome for opportunities to become fluent in Icelandic and French!
