About Me

Hello,

My personal website, www.sbenkorsh.net, features projects I have worked on since 2012. The work reflects my interest in producing programs, exhibitions, and publications about architecture, landscapes and urbanism. On each page you will find a summary of the project with relevant dates, locations, and links. These projects were completed while working at institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Architectural League of New York, Van Alen Institute, Skyscraper Museum, and the Institute for Public Architecture, and publications like Aggregate, Metropolis, Informality, and Urban Omnibus.

In my research I focus on inequalities in buildings and landscapes. I am interested in how broad arrangements of political economy can be understood through concepts like race, gender, sexuality, imperialism, and nature. Using qualitative methods such as archival research and site visits, I focus on these concepts by understanding the people and materials that construct a given built environment. Currently I am researching the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, focusing on how the building is shaped by material and cultural forces in California and beyond. I have previously researched Jamaica Bay in New York City, Chinese fishing settlements in Califonia, and land reclamation in Hong Kong.

As an M.S. student at the University of California, Berkeley, I study architecture history, theory and society. I serve as a student representative to Berkeley's MS/PhD Architecture Faculty Committee and the Global Urban Humanities Initiative, and steward a chapter of The Architecture Lobby. I graduated with a B.A. in architecture history from the City University of New York in 2014. My undergraduate studies were supported by fellowships from Thomas W. Smith, Josh and Judy Weston, and the City College Fellowship, jointly funded by the City College of New York and The Ford Foundation.

I became interested in architectural history because my mother and father are architects.

Best,
Sben
