ABOUT ME

I've never liked 'About Me' boxes. I think the pictures people choose to put on their profile often speak louder than the words they write. So feel free to look at my pictures if you want to see who I am.

As for the basics. Well, I'm optimistic to a fault, which tends to work against me when traveling off the seat of my pants.

I just got back from teaching English on one of the most unknown islands of Japan: Tsushima. That's because it is closer to South Korea than Japan. Still, it is a beautifully awesome place and I am glad it is so rural. It was my private little playground for a year. I taught English when not kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and generally having the time of my life.

Since getting back to the US I've graduate school and now study in my dark room late into the night... wishing that I was back on my island.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Well, I am a CS evangelist. Everyone I meet hears a 5 minute presentation on why CS is awesome and why they should join.

Also, I am volunteer for the CS External Research Team, helping people conduct research with CS data!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I spent 3 months traveling from Japan to Germany by land and sea using CS almost exclusively. It was the best experience of my life. Meeting people became the highlight because, let's be honest, you can only see so many Old Towns in Europe before they get a little old.

Seeing just how trusting and friendly people around the world are really gave me hope for humanity.

I've also couchsurfed when I traveled to schools for interviews and met some great people in the US too.

Like so many others, I am interested in many things such as reading, SCUBA diving, karate, iaido, karaoke, hiking, doing new things, dancing, and other randomness...

Allowed a doctor to remove my appendix through my mouth. Seriously. I was the second person in the US to have it done that way.

Dropped everything and moved to a remote island between Japan and Korea.

I saw a family of 5 riding on a motorcycle in Cambodia. With the youngest daughter of like 14 driving. With 3 live pigs lying on a board in the back.

Oh, and on the same road, 3 people on a motorcycle... one of whom was holding a bicycle. Don't believe me? Look at my profile pictures.

I am up to learning just about anything, which I guess means I may know a few things to share.

I opened a co-worker's cabinet with a letter opener and paperclip when they lost their keys. That is a useful skill.

I'd really like to learn how to use poi.
