ABOUT ME
I prefer a good adventure to a life of complacency. Sharing my skills with others has always been something that makes me happy. My best times are spent out and about experiencing and learning what I can wherever I am. I am not as big a partier as I used to be but I am good company and know how to have a good time. I am laid back and easy to get along with, and I have a thirst for knowledge and the unknown. Generally I like to find a balance between planning and spontaneity in my life...currently the pendulum has swung towards the latter, haha.
PHILOSOPHY
Accept that there are things that are beyond your control, and do not let them affect your life negatively.
Shit happens. What goes around comes around. Do not allow the events of your past to dictate your present reality.
Is more money or power worth it if you can't look yourself in the mirror each day?
Do you ingest and accept the fabricated "culture" that the mainstream sources provide or do you create your own culture?
I enjoy learning other people's philosophies as mine are pretty cut and dry. Nothing revolutionary but these are things I have come to realize through personal experience.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
New to couchsurfing, hoping to find hosts for my upcoming trip to Slovenia and Croatia.
兴趣
Music - I play guitar, piano, minimal drums and have an ear for music. I love jamming with other musicians and can pick up a tune quickly.
Nature - I have a deep love for the natural world and am infinitely fascinated with it. I am a graduate of geology in college, so I have a wide background of knowledge that I am fortunate to be able to apply in just about any environment. Many of my main hobbies stem from this love of nature: whitewater kayaking, hiking, camping, biking, snorkeling, etc. Whitewater kayaking and rafting is my current love and I hope to pursue this interest all over the world. I am always down for a good hike or adventure in the wild.
History - Admittedly I am a huge history buff, natural and man-made, and make it a priority wherever I go to learn as much as I can about the local history and culture.
Cooking - I have worked as a restaurant chef in the past and am good at whipping up dishes based on whatever ingredients are available. I enjoy feeding others with my cooking and finding new ingredients to use.

音乐、电影和书籍
I love just about any type of music, preferably live music with real instruments. You can find something you like in just about every genre, regardless of any preconceived notions. I also like making music with guitar, piano, or whatever I can get my hands on.
Don't watch as many movies as I used to but my all time favorites are Raiders of the Lost Ark, Roadhouse, Joe Dirt, and They Live. As you can see I have very sophisticated tastes in film.
I read a lot. I mostly read non-fiction though; reality truly is so fascinating and amazing. For fiction I am a big fan of Lord Of The Rings, Vonnegut, and anything with a dark humor/satire twist.
我做过的一件不可思议的事情
The most mind blowing thing I have seen was right here in my home state of Virginia, while camping atop a mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the western portion of the state. A meteor streaked across the entirety of the visible sky horizon and lit up the night. This was no ordinary shooting star - make a circle with your thumb and forefinger the size of a silver dollar, hold it up to the sky, and that is the size of the meteor as it made its way across our entire field of view.
Another awesome moment that comes to mind was during a trip to the Galapagos Islands. We had received word that there were many small reef sharks gathered near the shoreline of an island while our boat was anchored. My brother and I set off with our snorkel gear to find these sharks and found that the water was very cloudy. The water was about 4 feet deep. Here we are, floating on the surface, when suddenly the water clears up. To our surprise (and adrenaline rush) there are sharks EVERYWHERE just 2-3 feet below us. For some reason we were not afraid and accepted the fact that these sharks were not hostile. We swim back with a huge rush. Very cool
Many more stories from other trips that don't come to mind immediately...just ask.
教,学,和分享
Hmmm....what can I teach? A few things come to mind.
-Guitar.
-Piano.
-How to jam along with experienced musicians, even if you are not one.
-General confidence for cooking...it's easier than you think.
-Make spice rubs for meat and vegetables.
-Open beer bottles with just about anything.
-Many things nature/geology related. The joke on people who study geology is that we can tell you a little bit about a lot of different things, but can't go into depth on any one thing. If you're willing to listen I can teach you about Earth processes and interpreting rocks.
-That everything in nature is fractal...this is a big one
-U.S. history and info about the many different states I have visited. We aren't all fat sick idiots fortunately.
