Recently I have been in Paris in some "Friends hostel" 18 erondisment Monmartre ( Hostel is located Boulevard de la Chapelle) for 3 days. In short: there is a little unsafe place for ordinary tourists, it isn't the best choice for people who want to rest and enjoy of parisian dishes. You can see other people's review about this hostel and place where is located(http://www.hostelbookers.com/propertyreviews/prp/55023/arr/2013-05-09/ngt/2/ppl/1/), but it is not the most important and I'm not complain on this hostel. The main thing that I want to say, if you want to see the real Paris and discover how people live on the outskirts of Paris and not only in museums it is a good place to start discover it. There are a lot of different nationality people, almost no native French. If you are planning visited Paris and want to discover Paris closer you should will have been there a little. I advise you to take a walk from Boulevard de la Chapalle (station Barbes-Rocheteau) - go in the direction the Boulevard de la Vilette - Boulevard de Belleville. You can see there are 3 different areas where 3 different or more nationality living next to each other. Sadly that many of them haven't housing at all.
