ABOUT ME

As a student, I was an international exchange junkie, living with host families in Kuala Lumpur, Antibes, and Tianjin. That wasn't enough traveling, so I joined the US State Department and worked in Beijing and Kinshasa. That was too much traveling, so I moved to Seattle, studied computer science, and started working for Amazon.com. I've been based near Seattle since 1994, but I still travel a lot. Most of my volunteering is with AFS, an international high-school exchange organization.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My rendition of a Mongolian folk song won a singing contest for non-native residents in China. Over 10 million viewers watched me on TV. I became a temporary celebrity, and from among my fans, two people presented unsolicited offers of marriage.
