About Me

Instagram: EpicWalksWithShin

I’ve spent equal portions of my life in Japan and the USA. I currently tutor mathematics and chess in Tokyo. Enjoying a nice cup of coffee while having a conversation/people watching at a cafe is one of my favorite past time activities.

Super easy going. Pretty much can sleep anywhere. Will try and eat anything including bugs.

Yearly Goals:
My goal for 2019 is 10,000,000 steps or 8000km of walking. As a part of this goal, I’ve walked through cities, mountains and countrysides all over Japan.
My most recent walk was the Shikoku Pilgrimage: 2000km+ walk over 39 days (with climbing equivalent to the height of Everest over 3 times)!

My goal for 2020 is to cycle the distance equivalent to the circumference of the Earth or 40,075km! As a part of this goal, I am thinking about cycling through every European capital over 2 months.

Although I enjoy the challenge, my primary purpose for these forms of travel is to really be able to see everything between the tourists spots while keeping my carbon footprint low. I also try to contribute my distance cycled/walked to charity using an app on my phone! Furthermore, local food tastes amazing when you are hungry all the time!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To meet new people and learn about various cultures. Interactions with locals is and important part of traveling. By Couchsurfing, my understanding is that you get to see what a real home is like in any given destination and you can’t get that in any hotel or hostel. One of the first things I do whenever I visit a place is to go to the supermarket because restaurants are great but I want to see what normality is in the life of the local. Couchsurfing is an extension of this curiosity. I want to know what a normal place looks like!
