About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Hmm, la France

ABOUT ME

Well, I'll be in France from September onwards and I'll be working as an English Language Assistant in two schools in Nantes. I'll be in Paris for ten days or so before I head off for Nantes.

All about me? Well, in Melbourne the people haven't seemed to like my music, so I'm hoping that the people in France are more enlightened, or something, and consider me the best thing since sliced bread, or something, but, I don't know.

PHILOSOPHY

A general statement that I have grown fond of is, 'anything that one cannot buy in an op shop is not worth owning'. That covers everything really, from anti-capitalistic notions to, well, it pretty much only covers anti-capitalistic notions. Of late I have been seeing people from the Socialist Party attempting to enlist numbers - I had a bad experience with some socialists once, so I avoid them now - if you meet me, you can hear the story. I wrote a song about the girl recruiting for the Socialist Party. I also wrote a song about a girl from Toulouse that's called The Girl from Nantes - it's in french though. I'd just met a girl from Nantes in a book shop.

If you ever come to Melbourne, go to the book shop called Fully Booked in Thornbury - that's not the shop where I met the girl from Nantes, but it's the shop that was the determining factor that led to my move to Thornbury, which was my final move before my move to France.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

This is the first time that I've participated unfortunately, which I'm regretful about now. So, at present, I'm looking for a place to stay in Paris for a few nights during September! When I'm settled somewhere in France, I'll be happy to reciprocate people's kind hospitality .... if it's feasible, depending on my living arrangements.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

This is my first one! I've met cool people in Melbourne who have been having in the process of surfing couches, and I've known people who have had couch surfers over, but I haven't had any first hand experience. Ah, but soon, maybe I'll change this.

Interests

This and that, which pretty much covers everything.

I'm a bookish individual, so I like books! I have a number of CDs, which I'll probably never see again because I plan to not return to Australia in the foreseeable future. I am anti i-pod technology so when I am in France and/or Europe I will hope to accumulate another record collection that I will need to leave behind whenever I move somewhere else.

Music, Movies & Books

Hmm, I like Ghost World, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the De Grassi movie, the Daria movies, um, The Rage in Placid Lake (although I hate Ben Lee), Amelie, and I like Edward D Wood Junior. I used to consider myself the musical equivalent of Ed Wood, but not anymore, although I like to play guitars that are prone to stop working at any moment.

I like Bobby Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, the Smiths, and so on. And, if you don't know Baseball or the Useless Children, you should. Baseball no longer exist, and you had to see them live to experience them. But the Useless Children are quite good also. As are a group called Motel a-go-go, or something, who I believe only ever played one gig, which I was lucky to see.

My favourite book is Factotum, but I lent it to an artist once, and now I'm never going to see her again. That book perfectly represents my personal philosophy as outlined above, or maybe not outlined above. I don't have any particular type of book that I like to read. At present I am in the middle of six books I believe. Because I read so many books at once, sometimes I feel the need to actually finish a book, so I read a novella, or just finish a book, or something.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I don't like to toot my own horn, but ....

Teach, Learn, Share

Baseball (the band), as is their Myspace page. Seeing them for the first time was one of the two life changing musical experiences I've had. The other was hearing 'I'll Kill Her' by SoKo, after which I described her as being the greatest songwriter since Bob Dylan - a statement that I stand by.
