About Me

This little light of mine...I'm gonna let it shine.

Couchsurfing is a beautiful project, and I've loved every moment of my journey as a Milwaukee Ambassador. Please check out my references for snippets of those adventures. There are so many things that makeup a person, it's hard to share that all in a website description! However, some of the things that make me who I am are my love of:

life, ska music, Hanson, faeries, LOTRO, sci-fi books & movies, Thai food, Jesus, napping, Hayao Miyazaki, acts of compassion, my two kitties, velvety coffee, my hilariously inappropriate friends, my unfailingly supportive family, Transformation City Church, traveling around the world, learning from indigenous cultures, generous people, vegetarian cuisine, having my arms scratched or my back massaged, laying in the sun, sledding, people-watching, Christmas, Newaukee & Art Milwaukee, babies, working at a programmatic homeless shelter, Acacia Theatre, wearing warm fuzzy pajama pants, praying, bike riding, swimming, cuddling, yoga, running into old friends, laughing, writing creatively and lyrically, reading, Pumpkin Spice anything, geeky things, and being appreciated.

I also blog (who doesn't?) though I'm behind....as usual....

I believe writing is a gift to yourself and others. And two of my most favorite gifts ever were two pieces of writing from two very different and beloved friends. The Courtney they describe is the Courtney I hope to be every day.

I'm also a huge nerd and newish-gamer. Lover of LOTRO and the webseries The Guild. Comic-con, anyone?

"The impossible often has a kind of integrity to it which the merely improbable lacks." - Douglas Adams

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." - 1 Cor 13:13

"I find hope in what eyes don't see, I find hope in your hate for me." -Hanson

"We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same." -Anne Frank

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I've been the Ambassador of Milwaukee, Wisconsin since 2005, and every year I fall more in love with my city. From 2005-2011 I hosted hundreds of Couchsurfers from around the world and United States. During that time I was also blessed by hosts in many countries. The Couchsurfing Community has given me friends for life, and experiences that have made my life worth living. While I cannot host at the moment, please let me show you around my city. I promise you will fall in love with it, too.

Some great resources for Milwaukee to-do's!

We'll need a coffee or a beer to delve into them all :)

Aside from the laudry list above, I love people, and that's been one of the greatest blessings of Couchsurfing. While travel is a passion of mine, people are as well, and I've met some of the coolest, weirdest, kindest and most generous people through this Couchsurfing project.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I hiked through the jungles of Paraguay following a man with a machete and a rifle, then jumped off a waterfall and spent the day swimming in it. Rock climbed back up past giant tarantulas sunning themselves, and then hiked back home to sleep on a hammock overlooking the jungle and volcano at night. Amazing doesn't cut it. I also survived a flight that I was sure was actually going to lead to my death with fellow Couchsurfer and close friend Ben. The account:

Teach, Learn, Share

According to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide, a clean towel and the Guide is all you need when traveling. May I recommend a few other things:

Travel Pillow, Personal Care Items (deodorant, toothbrush/paste, etc. - don't assume all countries use or sell the things we use everyday), Ear Plugs, Camera, things to remind you of home [if it's a long journey!], a Good Book, Journal, Headphones/I-Pod, something for your host from your country. Nothing fancy, but this is all about sharing cultures among travelers, and they are generously hosting you.

And take the time to leave a reference for your friends and your hosts or guests. It is how we as a community will be able to learn about each other, and it will help when determining whether or not to host or surf with someone else.
