Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue

Highlights from my first trip to India:

One: an impromptu carnatic music performance inside the temple in Trichy, with a temple elephant just feet away from us and a group of devotees watching with us while waiting for the goddess' daily procession out of the sanctum sanctorum.

Two: during the Chittirai festival in Madurai, going to the temple for shopping, and happening upon a drum line, temple elephant, group of camels, and a bull all within the same 50-foot radius.

Three: going to Alagar Kovil with an American acquaintance, being led up to the goddess and generously given large tikas and flower garlands.

Four: walking out of my hotel in residential, middle class Bangalore and seeing a camel walking in front of me.

Five: waking up to the beautiful call to prayer at the mosque outside my lodge in Triplicane in Chennai. I always stayed there whenever I went to Chennai, just because I loved listening to the call to prayer.

Six: watching the aarti on the Ganga at night in Varanasi. Nearly walking into the burning ghats there as well, which looked and felt like hell.

Seven: watching the Karnataka landscape outside my train to Goa in December, feeling like I'd never seen a prettier countryside.

Highlights from my second trip to India:

- Driving through the mountains on the way from Manali to Leh.

- Watching the nightly ceremony at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

- Sitting in the energetic audience on the Indian side of the Wagah border.

- Living in a village in Tamil Nadu for a month.

Other travel highlights include climbing Mayan ruins in the Peten in Guatemala, soaking in a geothermal hot tub next to the Atlantic while it snowed in Iceland, and crossing the longest fjord in Europe by ferry in Norway.
