One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I lived in Spain for three years and saw a zillion beautiful things, but one that's burnt into me for all time was the gypsies' procession in Sacromonte. I was staying with a friend who lived in one of those beautiful white-washed candlelit caves, and coming up the mountain to her one night during Semana Santa I passed increasingly slowly through in a thickening crowd of observers. They were waiting for the gypsy Christ to be carried on his pavilion up the slope. Everywhere there were beer and sausages being sold, and everywhere the mass up and down the layers of Sacromonte circled around bonfires or around musical relatives and neighbors, clapping those insane 12-beat flamenco rhythms everyone in Spain learned on the playground.
