ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Ruth. My friends would describe me as responsible, practical, caring, and generous. I'm pretty easy going, in the calm, steady way. I'm a practical person--I want things to work well, whether its an event I'm planning or how to cook dinner. I genuinely care about people and like to get to know different types of people.

I lived in China for 3 years and I'm fascinated by different cultures and languages. I work with refugees a lot, and I love learning about the places that they came from and how they ended up in Grand Rapids.

Interests

I love spending time with friends--it doesn't matter so much what we are doing as that we are together.
In my spare time, I like cooking and baking, decorating my apartment, reading, sewing, and sometimes trying other crafts. This summer I have also been spending time camping and hiking.

Fav Books: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, "The Road Less Traveled" (and other poems) by Robert Frost, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I visited Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province, China. It was the foothills of the Himalayas and it was the most beautiful place I've ever been. The air was crisp and clear and the mountains were beautiful!

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: ESL (English as a Second Language) and teaching it, basic cooking and sewing, introductory Chinese language and culture

Learn: new board games, knitting and crocheting, cooking new foods, new cultures
