COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My friend had recently moved to Chicago from New York and was lonely. So I found an ad on craigslist for a school bus altered to run on vegetable oil making its maiden voyage from New York to Chicago. We barely made it through Ohio and had to go the rest of the way without brakes, just gearing down. Sadly the bus never fully recovered. Upon arriving I surprised my friend who proceeded to show me all around Chicago. Since her place was not an option I sent roughly 50 messages to various hosts. I was hosted for two nights by different people. It was a defining moment in my life that would not have been possible or at least pleasant without the kindness of many strangers that I received.

The most amazing thing I can think of is ___. Which is a giant festival in ___. I've went the last four years and intend to continue that trend as long as possible. It's more than the music - I love being in a place where you can treat anyone like a long-time friend and expect the same in return.

One moment that left me awestruck was REDACTED
There was actually a budget surplus at the time of the cuts.
Funding for teachers, libraries, homelessness, an much more were cut.
There were some concessions in that firehouses weren't cut and thousands of teachers were laid off through attrition rather than being outright fired.
However, they were small concessions for such a contentious issue.
The vote passed with only one nay, and so, many felt that we had failed. While that is true in a sense, there was a lot of value in what we did. What the value pertains to remains to be seen.
While we occupied the area we chose we had a free library, free food for anyone and offered teach ins, speak outs, and cultural programs. While we were there we created a safe area for some people to sleep who did not feel comfortable in the city's shelters for various reasons.
Those of us who stayed there learned a lot about occupying, politics, and many other things. Personally I felt I had learned more in 3 weeks than I had the whole of the previous year. The experience taught me skills I still use today.
