About Me

I don't know much about traveling. I know quite a bit about fish. So when I travel, I usually end up snorkeling for hours and hours at a beach, on a coral reef, or even in a river. I want to get better at traveling. I want to gain the confidence to explore new places and cultures and ideas. Rather than doing those things alone in a book or on the internet, I'd like to connect with ordinary people who have the extraordinary courage to offer their couch to a naive stranger.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My girlfriend has hosted and traveled through couchsurfing. She learns so much more about the world than I do. I guess I want to be more like her. I have helped her host frequently, and I joined her in surfing a couple of times. It was time to get my own profile.

Interests

I'm a resource and nature conservation advocate, and I tend to see most things through an environmental lens. I like hiking and snorkeling but, when I play, my activities usually involve sport. Those sports are getting less vigorous as I age, transitioning from gymnastics in my youth toward darts.

Music, Movies, and Books

Some movies I've really enjoyed include Delicatessen, Rushmore, and Moon (though not the ping pong scene). I'm not a very good reader, but I do enjoy David Sedaris books. Regarding music, I tend to like things I can sing in the shower, but I can refrain...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was doing field work in graduate school I spent a lot of time without much human contact. That level of solitude isn't amazing, but it seems to be unusual, and I think it's quite difficult for many people, even for introverts. I came back to my normal circumstances with a changed perspective. I would like to learn to challenge my usual perspective more regularly. Maybe that kind of experience will help me do something amazing one day.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've taught gymnastics and biology. I've tried to learn many things, and I will keep trying.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I imagine my stays would generally consist of me going out and trying to explore some place, making up a bunch of interpretations about what I heard, saw, or smelled, and then returning eager to share my accumulated knowledge only to find that my hosts can easily show me that my interpretations are absurd. I would learn a lot, and perhaps people hosting me would be amused.

Other than that, I'm pretty good at unskilled manual labour.
