About Me

My name is Steven, 32 years old, and I'm currently based in Pretoria, South Africa. I genuinely love to travel, to meet people and to try new food. For two and a half years I rode a small motorbike 100.000km overland from Malaysia to Germany and then circumnavigated Africa.

After this journey I found a job with a development organisation and currently work and live in Pretoria with my wife Aliaa. We rent a comfortable small house in a suburb of Pretoria and would be happy to share it with fellow travellers for a few days.

We enjoy cooking at home, going out to restaurants, exploring the city, and meeting curious, interesting people. If you pass through Pretoria, please feel free to send us a request explaining your trip and what your plans are for your stay. We'll do our best to respond quickly to everyone :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Initially it was a great and cheap way to get a warm shower and meet nice people during my overland trip. Now it's a good way for Aliaa and me to meet interesting travellers even though we have a "normal" settled down life by now.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love to read. Mostly non-fiction about African politics but also some fiction. Dürrenmatt (Swiss author) is among my favourites. So is Naipaul, Kapuscinski and many more.

There's not really one specific kind of music I enjoy... I listen to Jazz, Reggae, Rock, Classical... Basically everything. Among my favourites are Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Rolling Stones, Eddie Vedder and David Gray.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Plenty of crazy stories during the overland trip. I travelled the infamous Kinshasa-Lubumbashi road in DRC, was beaten up by a Pakistani soldier, arrested in Iran for "unstable behavior", had tea with Nomads in Morocco... Plenty of stories to share :)

Countries I’ve Visited
