À propos de moi

CURRENT MISSION

Understanding life, the Universe and everything

ABOUT ME

I'm Steven (minus the 'n' when I'm abroad), I live in downtown Groningen and I'm currently in my last year of studying Dutch private law. I'm working on my thesis, so this leaves some time open for some more travelling :)

I was born and raised in the Groningen area together with my older brother. Before my study I've been in the Dutch Army for a short while, so I'm a bit of a latecomer when it comes to studying. Although I've lived in the Groningen region my whole life, I've travelled to various interesting countries, such as Indonesia, China, Iran and Tanzania, mostly with my good friend and 'travelbuddy' Floris (see one of my photos).
Troughout my travels I've noticed that the most memorable experiences are those you didn't see coming. Hence my preference for a 'laid-back' way of travelling. Which does include the Lonely Planet ofcourse :)

Giving a personal description isn't the easiest thing to do, but I guess these keywords apply to me: open minded, humorous, perfectionistic, daydreamer from time to time, friendly, nuanced, curious and quite rational. But do find out for yourself :)

PHILOSOPHY

I think we're all part of some huge practical joke. So we'd better enjoy it as much as we can. Not religious, if that wasn't clear already after the first sentence :) After all: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm new on this website, but I've 'surfed' quite some couches during my visits to (mainly) Iran and Indonesia. Since most of my travels lasted 4-6 weeks only, I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know people that way, and seeing/hearing how they lead their daily lives. I think it's the best and most enjoyable way to get to know a country and it's people, given the limited time I usually had.

Centres d'intérêt

These cover a wide range of topics, but I guess the following are here to stay:(amateur)astronomy, travelling, politics, seeing friends, religion and various sports.

  • culture
  • politics
  • traveling
  • socializing
  • sports
  • astronomy
  • law
  • religion

Morceaux de musique, films et livres

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Groundhog Day, Inglorious Bastards, Office Space, The Matrix.

All kinds of music, no specific genre. Some say it's a bad taste in music, some say it's a broad and open minded taste in music. Take your pick!

Books written by Stephen King, and non-fiction books about my various interests.

Enseignez, apprenez, partagez

I'm always interested in learning about and/or from foreign people, language and culture, and it's nice to meet people who feel the same way about The Netherlands ofcourse.
