About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To get out more.

ABOUT ME

If I think you are looking to stay in NYC, I will just click no.
Please give me at least a week's notice.
I will not host for more than three nights.
If you asked multiple people (lots and lots of people) to stay at their place, please don't ask me, as well. (I don't care to keep making sure a visit is kosher with all here, only to be told, "Oh, I'm staying somewhere else, k bye.")
There are four people total in this house. If I am not able to be present, they will not bite, and they are quite safe to be around. One of them is https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/stuiliz

--------------
My name is Joel Stewart; I play the trumpet. I am open to you using my space. I will provide you with tools to operate independently while here. I am not a tour guide; I do not want to "take you around town," or "show you the sights."

In regards to trumpets, I am far better than I used to be, though perhaps not as good as I will be tomorrow. I like vests and suspenders, but not belts, ties, or bowties. I tend to believe that everything is equally valid or invalid.

PHILOSOPHY

Many people will tell you that everything is important. They are all correct; yet they are all incorrect, for everything is equally valid. You can disagree with that; that is valid, too.

I try to be as aware as I can of people and things around me, but might not do too well at this.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

As of this posting, I have hosted a total of four CSers.
I have also partaken in a few CS meetup-type-things.
I have engaged in a "coffee/drink" with one person.
I have surfed at three "hosts."

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosting experiences so far have been positive. Surfing experiences have likewise been positive. For me it beats hotels, motels, or other, I guess because there is a "headquarters" or "home" quality to the place I stay (perhaps it is just that I am staying with people). Even though the interactions are somewhat superficial, they are nice.

Interests

Trumpets and music, mostly.

Music, Movies, and Books

Dokshizer, Timofei: Romantic Pictures.
Juster, Norton: The Phantom Tollbooth

Burton, Tim: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Kurosawa, Akira: Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Ikiru.
Vinton, Will: The Little Prince and Other Stories.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I performed with a brass band in a place I'd never been, with people I'd never met, and I saw the music a total of two times.

I played a trumpet once at this "talent show"; I got half the audience clapping, half patting, and then I ran out into the audience with the mic and alternated fours with various audience members.

Teach, Learn, Share

How to operate a trumpet. How to operate a brass instrument. How to practice.
Music: Notation, theory, form, singing for pitch.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, United Kingdom, United States
