I'm Stew, and I currently live and study in Oulu, Finland. Whilst at times it feels like a privilege to be here, the isolation and extremes of light and darkness can get a bit Jack Nicholson once in a while if you know what I mean? :)
I suppose I've been around a fair bit, made a few mistakes and met some incredible people along the way as you do. I was born in England, but it's been years since I was based there, miss the sense of humour sometimes I must admit :) I lived in Bologna, Italy for a year as an Erasmus 'student', eating copious amounts of food, drinking wine every evening, and hitchhiking in my free time. I spent 5 years in South Korea on and off, teaching English to rowdy kids, studying at a peace institute and meditating in the countryside, plus interning at a fire station along the way :) More recently I worked for a women's rights NGO in Kyrgyzstan, and now comtemplating the next step.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Getting to know people and becoming active again on the site that has provided me with many memories over the years.
I loved backpacking and I still aspire to resume my RTW that was cut short so many years ago! Spontaneous weekend trips are more my thing these days, always on a shoestring of course :)
Dogs are my best friends, and we plan on getting a sausage dog when we are stable. Until then, plans to volunteer at a sloth sanctuary in Central America are still in the pipeline.
Roaming in the nature with some lakes and fresh air makes me happy, preferably a waterfall or two for good measure as well. In Finland we cycle a lot and go hare spotting at night, although it is always night up here to be honest :)
Music, Movies, and Books
I am a researcher these days, and wading through oceans of academic journals has put me off books for a while :) Whilst I don't get much time for it, I love independent cinema and foreign films, particularly from in and around East Asia. As for music, my partner has got me interested in classical these days, and going to concerts regularly is superb.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Meeting my partner Jiwon in South Korea - The major turning point in my timeline, and with her, life always has something amazing to share every single day. One thing in particular? Studying in the north of Finland and watching the aurora together from our apartment window :)
