About Me

Play in a blues band.

All day, every day, I follow my heart. Worldly goods don't distract me. I'm never bored as I walk and take the bus, thinking about current projects.

I remember the grownups discussing whether we should be in the Second World War or not after they listened to Hitler's speeches replayed with translations on the radio.

Apparently, I don't need anything I wanted, because I don't have it, and I'm blissful.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I recently acquired a sailboat in San Pedro, CA, where I can host when I'm there.

Since I joined this group, I have hosted several couchsurfers on my boat in Los Angeles, stayed with a host in Germany, helping with her house and garden, and stayed with a host in London for one week. Before the internet was invented, several visitors stopped over at our family farm. Some stayed for years at a time.

Jazz, writing, forthright honesty, self-help peer support, homestead farming, independence, green business, peace, survival (but I'm not hysterical about it).

Music, Movies & Books

Music: Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Stan Goetz, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughn, Norah Jones, Steely Dan, Willie Neslon; Debussy, Ravel, Faure.

Movies: About sixty years ago, a movie, Viva Zapata, helped me to become a pacifist. The Fabulous Baker Boys is an accurate depiction of the culture of jazz performance, except that they omitted some of the drug addiction in the original script.

Books: Calvin and Hobbes, Doonesbury, Please Understand Me II, The Trial of Socrates by Plato, Catcher in the Rye. Break a Leg's trail journal at http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=85724

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I rode out of New Orleans on a bike the day before Katrina arrived.
