About Me

Hey I'm Anna

California born and bred. Went to university in WA, lived abroad for a few years in Asia, and now call PDX home. I've traveled internationally since before I could walk, and it has played a huge part in who I am today.

I work at a non-profit where I help people build better lives for themselves and their families. My eventual goal is to do development work on an international level as a program officer for either for the UN or a big NGO like Mercy Corps or the Gates Foundation. When I'm not working I like to run, play sports, hangout with family and friends, explore the city, drink coffee/craft beer, read, and spend as much time as possible outside.

The two and half years I lived, taught, and traveled around Asia were some of the best years of my life so far and I miss it everyday. I've also spent time in Europe and Australia. Next up on the travel agenda is backpacking through Latin America and Eastern Europe.

PHILOSOPHY

"If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough."
― Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."
― Albert Einstein

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
― Howard Thurman

“…travel can become a compulsion. It keeps us away from friends and loved ones – even when we’re back. When I’m away, I often yearn for home. When I’m home, I’m listless. I seem no longer to fit. History and literature are filled with characters who see Asia, or Venice, and can never go back to the way they were.”
― Anthony Bourdain

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

CS is such an awesome way to meet people and see the world from a local's view. All my experiences with CS have been great so far. One of the best parts of meeting people through CS is hearing their stories and their perspectives on life.

I've surfed in China, Japan, and in parts of Europe. CSers also offered to meet up with me and show me around in Kobenhavn, Koln, London, and Amsterdam when I was on my solo backpacking trip last year and it made my time in those cities even more incredible.

I've also hosted quite a bit in China and Oregon. I'm always up for meeting new people and showing them the amazing city of Portland.

Music, Movies & Books

Music: Sigur Ros, Coldplay (love pretty much all kinds though)
Movies: Remember the Titans, Forrest Gump (not a huge movie/TV person...I'd rather be outside)
Books: I'm usually reading about current events, business, travel, global development, human rights issues, and non-fiction based in other countries.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat.
Riding in a taxi in Chengdu, China and having a lengthy heart-to-heart about life with the driver (in Chinese).
Hanging out with Cambodian kids and teaching them how to throw a Frisbee.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: Well I've been a teacher for the past two years, so I could probably teach you something about English and/or business. Also, I think I know quite a bit about Chinese language/culture and I'd be happy to share about that as well. I could also teach you how to throw a Frisbee and (almost) anything you want to know about sports.

Learn: I have a list of things I'd like to learn how to do in the near future. How to water-ski, snowboard, play the guitar, and speak another language are at the top of the list. I also love learning about other cultures and countries and people's lives. So please feel free to share! :)

Countries I've Visited

Australia, Cambodia, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, Viet Nam
