Hi!

My name is Taye. I am an open minded, easy going, respectful, compassionate student of life. I am currently pursuing my PhD in mycology, specifically studying the relationship between the roots of trees and fungi, also known as mycorrhizal symbiosis. I love to learn, and with that comes the of teaching. I am an open book with lots of knowledge/weird, obscure fun facts about the natural world, and am always yearning to deepen folk's understanding and appreciation of our animate Earth.

I earned my BS in Biology from the University of Central Florida where I researched various aspects of marine conservation and soil biology. Upon moving to California, I fell in love with fungi and engaged in various non-profit-led research projects - one of which is a three year post-fire microbial ecology study investigating the impacts of microbial inocula on burned soils in urban/wildlife interface zones. I also serves as a field mycologist for the California Fungal Diversity Survey, a state-funded project working to systematically document macrofungal diversity across California. I educate widely about various topics in mycology and ecology, and lead fungal ecology walks throughout California.

In my free time I love to surf, make art, experiment with fermentation, write poetry, and learn everything I can about the living earth!

I love the experiences couch surfing has brought me! It's such an amazing way to meet interesting folks in new places and gain a more intimate knowledge of the places I'm traveling.

I enjoy most genres of music - I love everything from jazz to rock to reggae to electronic to death metal.

Not a huge movie watcher, but I love a good comedy or enticing sci-fi thriller.

ALL books of ALL kinds. I am a huge reader and have read a vast majority of texts, anywhere from autobiographies to text books to fiction novels. One of my favorite books thus far is Shantaram by Gregory Davis. I am currently reading the Celestine Prophecy.

Sky diving in Lake Taupo, New Zealand over a chain of active volcanoes and crater lakes. Absolutely incredible experience.
