About Me

I'm very interested in life! Like to read about different countries, different worlds, to go out and meet people I never met before, to do sports and to explore the world in as many ways as possible. Grew up in a quiet and calm village near Utrecht, Netherlands, and got my first taste of the outside world when I went to live in a little mountain village in Malawi for 8 months after finishing my secondary school. Since then, I've been moving around a lot. :-)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Hi guys, I'm a lively guy, have traveled around the world a lot, in almost every continent. What I find most interesting from every country to take home and remember is not the beautiful architecture or the amazing nature. Of course, those things are great, but it is the contacts with people that really stick in my memory. The small things, stories and jokes, that you can exchange with people who grew up in a totally different place, that is what I always find in travelling to be the most powerful.

You know, all the ways in which people are different and all the ways in which we are similar would take a 1000 years of travelling the globe to discover. And of course, none of us have all that time. But through couchsurfing, we can at least try!

Music, Movies, and Books

#1 movie: Waking Life, amazing movie about consciousness, dreaming, reality and philosophy.

Music: these days techno, electronica, and stuff like Pink Floyd

Books: science fiction, non-fiction (in particular economics fascinates me, strange I know ;-)), history, best book recently: Diaspora, by Greg Egan.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After secondary school, I went to Malawi, to live in a little mountain village where I taught English and Math at a big boarding school - I also coached the school football team. Lived and worked there for 8 months.

It was an amazing time and it has continued to form an important part of my life ever since.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: sociology, economics, a little bit of kickboxing (but also want to learn there!), ...what else? let's find out when we meet! these things are not pre-packaged, they come up in the flow of conversation.

Learn: anything! languages, history, games, stories

Share: obviously, it's couchsurfing :)
