Sobre mí

ABOUT ME

My childhood dream was becoming an astronaut. Then I figured I would tone it down a little and dream about exploring the seven continents instead. The world is a beautiful place.

I enjoy travelling alone and with friends. My wanderlust has made it difficult for me to appreciate life when it's routine and simple. I need novelty to stay entertained. Falling in love with Vancouver where I live long-term now has been a slow waltz, but it's made me realize that it's easy to like cities when you're living up your dream in a few days. It takes much more effort to really enjoy somewhere you work, go to school, and carry out the mundane tasks of everyday life. But it's worth it to explore where you live and gain an understanding of that place before you embark on other journeys.

PHILOSOPHY

"You don't know anyone at the party, so you don't want to go. You don't like cottage cheese, so you haven't eaten it in years. This is your choice, of course, but don't kid yourself: it's also the flinch. Your personality is not set in stone. You may think a morning coffee is the most enjoyable thing in the world, but it's really just a habit. Thirty days without it, and you would be fine. You think you have a soul mate, but in fact you could have had any number of spouses. You would have evolved differently, but been just as happy.
You can change what you want about yourself at any time. You see yourself as someone who can't write or play an instrument, who gives in to temptation or makes bad decisions, but that's really not you. It's not ingrained. It's not your personality. Your personality is something else, something deeper than just preferences, and these details on the surface, you can change anytime you like.

If it is useful to do so, you must abandon your identity and start again. Sometimes, it's the only way.

Set fire to your old self. It's not needed here. It's too busy shopping, gossiping about others, and watching days go by and asking why you haven't gotten as far as you'd like. This old self will die and be forgotten by all but family, and replaced by someone who makes a difference.

Your new self is not like that. Your new self is the Great Chicago Fire—overwhelming, overpowering, and destroying everything that isn't necessary."

Música, películas y libros

My love for the masterpiece that is David Fincher's The Social Network kind of scares even me.

But beyond that, I'm pretty broad-spectrum. Some movies I've really enjoyed are 21 Jump Street, The Dark Knight, No Country for Old Men, Fight Club, Safety Not Guaranteed, and a dozen more I'm completely blanking out on right now.

I listen to all genres while having a compulsive tendency to play a song until I get absolutely sick of it. That being said, even despite the self-invoked nausea from replaying music, some amazing musicians to have escaped this unfortunate treatment: Passion Pit, Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Eminem, Frank Ocean, Bon Iver.

Reading more has had a constant presence on new year's resolutions although this tends to fizzle out pretty quickly, unfortunately. I really wish I read more. Of the books I have read though, Huxley's The Doors of Perception has some of the most riveting prose I think any human has ever written in history. A sad caveat in my reading habits: I tend to be more moved by the beauty of words rather than the complexity of a plot. I tend to abandon many books with a fantastically paced story but lacklustre language as a result.

People who have very specific taste in entertainment might find it horrific that I watch trashy reality television, listen to Justin Bieber on occasion, and read a plethora of bad fan ficiton. But hey, it's all in good fun.
