Cultural diffusion leads to the growth of civilizations. Even micro-connections between one world to another helps the world go round. To expand one's sphere of influence is paramount because staying isolated is what leads to apathy.

In another sense, couchsurfing allows me to truly connect to a place, rather than just merely be an outsider.
