About Me

Hey! I'm Tomas. I'm a 27 year old Slovak-Canadian. I was born and lived in Bratislava for 10 years, then emigrated to Canada and have been living in Edmonton since. I live with a couple of good pals and a dog who likes to sleep on his back with his teeth showing.

I'm really energetic and like to keep busy. I write creative non-fiction, play drums, produce music, and try to get out on my bicycle as much as I can.

I've realized that connecting to other people is what makes art, travel, and all of my interests worthwhile, and I think CS is a beautiful venue to make those true, empathetic connections.

Last time I traveled I met incredible people and gathered heaps of incredible ruminations along the way. I am currently writing a book more than partly inspired by those experiences. I write a lot about space and the body, compassion, mindfulness, alternate masculinity, absurdity, music and sound, and of course travel. Ask me about it!

I also make music as Goodnight, St. Idiot—a smattering of electronic and acoustic sounds in line with art pop.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I want to make friends in the places I'm visiting. I'm very interested in seeing how other people live their day to day. I want to learn new things and share what I know. Most of all, I would love to hear people's stories, if they would like to share them. Last time I traveled I made day-long best friends, a lot of whom I still keep up with!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:
Pretty much everything, but right now especially Shortparis, daKooka, Anohni, Tim Hecker, David Bowie, Toro Y Moi, Laurie Anderson, etc etc. Also love Gardens & Villa, Ducktails, Thundercat, Death Grips, Hiatus Kaiyote, Slowdive, Anderson Paak, Zach Hill, Bjork, War on Drugs, and many more. Lots of electronic, neo-soul, jazz, and psychadelic at the moment, but that always changes. Always thrilled to share music and receive recommendations! https://www.last.fm/user/Halpeart

Movies:
Thoughtful films, art films, and comedies. I really like David Lynch (and am happily watching Twin Peaks.) What We Do In The Shadows is probably my favorite comedy. I love absurdism.

Books:
Recently, The Tin Drum and Dog Years by Gunter Grass, and Anger by Thich Nhat Hanh.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The reason I got to travel last time is because I was awarded a travel award for a piece of short fiction I wrote. :)
