My mission: to live in Germany, learn the language and culture and develop my career as a designer.
I'm writing this current description sitting in a friend's apartment in downtown Beijing, listening to the sounds of Chinese New Year fireworks explode around me.
I'm on my way to Germany, where I will be living and working for a year or more, with my main goal being to learn German and develop my design career.
I love good food and drink and listening to/playing music.
I first made this CS profile a few years ago when I started travelling by myself, and didn't do much with it as I found couches through some friends. I'm back now and planning to be more active with it!
I haven't found a definition of my outlook on life that I agree with totally, so instead I would use the one I disagree least with - I'm an ethical humanist.
I'm moving to Germany to see what happens, as a challenge and to learn a bit about life outside of my home city of Melbourne.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I'm currently travelling and would love to meet some cool people. Once I arrive in Berlin I'd love to find somewhere to live for a few months or more, but in the meantime a couch to crash on would be awesome!
I'm a good cook and clean up after myself, and I like to look on the lighter side of life.
I've done enough travelling to know I haven't done enough travelling. I've crashed on various friend's couches around Australia and the world, but have not had much experience via the CouchSurfing website.
I created this profile a few years ago for my first trip to China and in the end found a couch via a friend instead. This time round, I'm keen to meet new people and this looks like it could be a good avenue for that!

Music, Movies, and Books
I read a lot, recently have read 'The Thousand Autumns of Jacob DeZoet' and am currently rereading 'Stumbling on Happiness'.
I listen to a really broad range of music, I tend to prefer non mainstream stuff but if I like it I'm not too worried about appearing trendy. Yesterday my playlist consisted of Jurassic 5, The Avett Brothers and some instrumentals.
I love watching comedy, I like black humour such as 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' - most of what I watch is comedy related.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I was at the helm of a two masted tall ship for an hour and a half in 40 kt winds in a 4 metre swell, during the middle of the night. Everything was pitch black and the deck was rotating about 43 degrees from side to side!
After I gave the helm to someone else, I went forward to the middle deck and found a baby penguin washed on deck, which we carefully put in a box with a blanket. It left the box about an hour later, hopefully it got home safe.
The next day, I was at the helm for about an hour while dolphins were jumping either side of the ship... an amazing experience. That and climbing the main mast in the middle of Bass Strait in 4 metre swells!
Recently, I watched the Chinese New Year fireworks from the rooftop of a Hutong apartment in Beijing - one of the most stunning things I've ever seen.
I sat in a train carriage, chatting with some Irish girls heading to Berlin for the first time, and watched the dusk over the River Elbe settle in - my thoughts were 'this is how life should be'.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach people how to get awesome shots from almost any camera, and I make a mean pasta.
