Hello Couchsurfing family, My name is Toski, Sangyi. I’m Chinese raised in both China and America.

When I was a teen, I was so rebellious that my mom had to send me to a “transformation” school, where I lived with a group of “left-behind”children in a mountain village in China for two years. It was a turning point of my life.

I grew up across different cultural environments, lived in big cities and international community for the most parts, but I always have this longing for the simplicity of village living. I came to realize a lot of my “elite” peers turned out to be so called “success” that draws them closer to our animal greed rather than what makes us uniquely human.

The “purpose” that they wrote in their college statement that they want to be in Columbia, Princeton, Stanford.. because they want to help those underprivileged ones. They eventually come to forget.

I teach a small group of privileged students in China. A program that helps to discover one’s self-identity and social identity, and how can we become better human being and participate in social lives to strive for social justice.

I travel frequently (now with my partner) to learn more about how this world actually works. So I can teach my students better. I look into the social challenges in and outside China in depth, to understand the world and us humans better and reflect on potential solutions.

One memorable trip I’ve had, is a long journey starting in west Germany back to China through land borders across the euro-Asia continent, in one trip I went through Europe, turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and back in China. Seeing all walks of lives and all the spectrums happening at the same time in the same universe is such a heavy thing. For one month after the trip I didn’t want to speak to anyone. This trip reminded me again what’s missing in our modern society - love, trust, support (the basics in humanity). We are more similar than we are different.

I founded an education company and an NGO to work on making a little difference, and to teach the “right” thing to our next generation.
