Hello Couchsurfing family, My name is Toski, Sangyi. I’m Chinese raised in both China and America.

When I was a teen, I was so rebellious that my mom had to send me to a “transformation” school, where I lived with a group of “left-behind”children in a mountain village in China for two years. It was a turning point of my life.

I grew up across different cultural environments, lived in big cities and international community for the most parts, but I always have this longing for the simplicity of village living. I came to realize a lot of my peers turned out to be so called “success” that the only thing they’re successful with is making money/climbing the corporate ladder.

The “purpose” that they wrote in their college statement that they want to be in Columbia, Princeton, Stanford.. because they want to help those underprivileged ones. They eventually come to forget.

I’m teaching some of the most privileged and elite students in China. I’m teaching them perspectives, self-identity and social identity, and how can we become better human being and participate in social lives to strive for social justice.

I spent half of my time travel-teaching in different countries, so I can grow, and learn more about how this world actually works. So I can teach my students better. I look into the social challenges in and outside China in depth, to understand the world better and predict potential solutions.

Just finished my Euro-Asia crossing trip, traveled all the way from Germany back to China through land route, through turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Seeing all walks of lives and all the spectrums happening at the same time in the same universe is such a heavy thing. It reminds me of what’s missing in our modern society, and what the basics are in humanity. We are more similar than we are different.

I founded an education company and a cultural community uplifting international awareness and involvement of Chinese children. But I absolutely oppose commercialization of education. Education is not a business.

Instead of looking at commercial return, we focus on impact we create to transform China, to connect China with the world, to connect all the countries..
