About Me

Yaharr me hearties!

It's your guitar wieldin', drum smashin', pirate impersonatin', trail runnin', chess playin', German learnin', rock climbin', wine drinkin', food cookin', couch-surfin', guest hostin', friend you're a few clicks away from meeting - Trevelyan Harper (Esquire) at your service.

About me.
What am I "about"? ...This is the most interesting question I've been asked this week and one that is deceptively philosophical.
I feel I don't know how to tell you "about" me but I can try to show you some of the things I am "about" and tell you some of the things I do and things I have done for as I write this and ponder what I am I begin to doubt (perhaps hopefully) that I am merely the sum of the things I do, have done and wish to do. It seems too simple to merely understand what I am "about" by interests and actions alone but that is all I can convey here. Perhaps I find language is too limited a method of communication to really convey anything of what I am "about" so I shall end this philosophical ramble by saying leave me to my existential crisis and enjoy the rest of my profile which will tell you, in earnest, of my interests and exploits and if they seem on the surface compatible with your own, let us meet, laugh and drink wine together and perhaps one day arrive at the knowledge of what we and this life and planet of ours is really all "about".

Life Philosophy:
Nosce te ipsum
Be like water my friend.

Mantra:
What if it were easy?

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've hosted dozens of guests from CS over the past few years but my old house mates and now my girlfriend were always the ones to organise the web side of things so I thought it's high time to get a profile myself! Hence I don't have many references yet. I'm trying to track down past guests to ask them to write something for me.

I have yet to use the site as a couch surfer but am very eager to! It's been so cool hosting different people from everywhere I want to experience the other side.

I'd love for someone to one day host my folk band when we're gigging somewhere away from home.

Interests

I'm a musician. Says most of it really. I get excited by originality in all its forms whether it's thought, action, words or sound. Outside of playing guitar and drums I enjoy struggling at harder instruments like violin and vocals. I stay pretty active and run, hike swim in the sea whenever I can. When I'm indoors I love to play interesting games like chess, Catan, Carcassonne and many others with friends and discuss love, life and philosophy.

When I'm on my own and not practising music I love to read books and watch documentaries and listen to podcasts.

Spending time with my amazing girlfriend Elena is one of the best things about my week.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - the list of bands and songs would reach to the sun. To shorten it lets say I love the sound of actual instruments. Live is better. My tastes are incredible eclectic from Rachmaninov and Chopin to Opeth and Dream Theater, from Dave Brubeck and Stevie Wonder to The Chieftains and The Beatles. But I began as an angsty teenager listening to 90's rock, metal and grunge.

Recent musical discoveries - Myrath (Tunisian Metal!) and Perkelt (Medieval speed folk)

Movies - Not that crazy about movies. Complete nerd though so Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings are right up there. Withnail and I has to be mentioned.

Books - 1984, Brave New World, LOTR, Ender's Game, Born to Run. Anything by H.G. Wells.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There have been some amazing gigs I've been lucky enough to play - Nar Fir Bolg folk festival in Belgium, launch night of the Transformers Angry Birds game and many others.

Walking 350km of The Camino de Santiago in Spain was pretty life changing. For anyone who has done this. You know what I mean.

I asked my girlfriend while writing this and she thinks swimming in the English channel in November is pretty amazing so I've put that here. :P

Teach, Learn, Share

I teach drums and guitar professionally and used to teach English too so I feel very qualified to share those.

I love to learn!

Share everything. Especially our thoughts, our ideas and our companionship.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Evenings of mirth. Songs and stories.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Russian Federation, Spain, United States
