About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To forego all my illusions, one ideal at a time. Then, to become, as DH Lawrence might say, an emotionally educated man.
ABOUT ME
This sentence, heading my profile, is in fact my most recent addition, and with it, the CS'ing platform will finally recognize my profile as complete. Hooray!
PHILOSOPHY
Why do I live my life? Because I've no choice really. We're stuck here, dammit. Why does an infant cry when it exits its mother's womb? Because it was really rather comfortable inside -- and now this? This is what all the existentialist philosophers mean by angst, only more directly and plainly stated in the screams of a bloody, placenta-soiled baby. What a stupid question.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Some of these categories are really rather superfluous. The answer to this question is evident in the wider content of my profile. Read on, if you care.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've had the good fortune to meet my current flat-mate, Thomas, through CS. He was surfing with my friend Martha, an avid, experienced, and gracious host/guest. He in turn provided me with a place to stay in Granada, with a dear friend of his, with whom I hope to foster a new friendship.
My friendship with Adam, another avid, very experienced, very generous, and sometimes gracious host/guest, introduced me to Celia, who was surfing in his glass house. We all had a positively splendid time in Halifax and Nova Scotia, splashing about the ocean, steaming ourselves like lobsters, trekking along rugged peninsulas, and feasting on the finest meals. Celia has since taken up temporary residence in my room while I'm away on her side of the Atlantic. That means that she and Thomas, both natives of France who've presumably travelled to Canada fully expecting to practice some English, are now sharing my flat, in my absence, and most likely conversing exclusively in French. I find that charming.
Apart from these wonderful and serendipitous experiences I have had numerous CS encounters over the past couple of years or so, primarily in association with Adam, who is always opening up his life and house to strangers and inviting me to participate in many a fine adventure. I've done so willingly, sometimes even enthusiastically.
Interests
I'm interested in things mostly. Having them and not having them, and what that means. Apart from things, I'm also interested in ideas. Having them and not having them, and what that means.
- sauna
- magic
- surfing
Music, Movies, and Books
Some of my favorite things are books and music. I don't usually like movies though, I prefer films.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Very patiently waited with perfect stillness while a hermit crab exchanged its broken and undersized shell for a newer and bigger home that I provided. This is upward mobility with a modest carbon footprint in action.
Also, took a natural steam sauna at the 2400 meter peek of a sleeping volcano while looking down on the clouds with contempt.
Furthermore, most recently, and for no good reason, I crossed the great big sea from Nova Scotia (Canada) to the Islas Canarias in a graceful sailboat powered solely by the wind and our collective blood, sweat, toil and tears.

Let us obliterate the ego.
Let us argue sincerely.
Let us doubt without prejudice.
Also, I'm good with my hands, have certain less tangible talents, and will amuse you at least once.
