I grew up free-range on an organic farm in Switzerland. As a teenager I embarked on a journey when I got awarded a scholarship to the United World College (UWC) in India at age 16. There I lived two years among people from 60 different nations, learning and broadening my viewpoint. A passionate self-taught, I then I pursued an interdisciplinary degree in human ecology from the College of the Atlantic, in the US, Mexico and Nepal. It was during this time that I started to engage with the concept of "open source" in search of a more open, sustainable and shared future. As I was growing my vision, I was growing an equal amount of frustration. I could see a better future, but I could not see how I would be part of that myself. I felt like a pretty useless part of a non-existent revolution. I had no skills, no money, no time, no experience – that's how it felt. But I had a sense of urgency. I had to find out now, and not later, if change is possible – I had to try. So at age 21 I embarked on my biggest journey yet, the journey to bring renewable energy access to everyone in the world. There were successes and failures, but what has kept me moving along this path is the intense learning, working and experiencing that comes from passion based work. I saw that I could take steps, and go forward from my visions. I realised that we all have to power to set examples. Be it small or big, an example is all that's needed to change the world. That was the most powerful realisation.
