to be a part of some solutions
I love sharing --skills, knowledge, ideas, and food. I enjoy questioning assumptions, and challenging conventions. Sometimes I am quiet and contemplative, and other times I am out-spoken and out-going. I'm an anarchist in spirit, a socialist in politics, and mostly a community-builder in practice.
"We need to be clear that there is no such thing as giving up one's privilege to be 'outside' the system. ONE IS ALWAYS IN THE SYSTEM. The only question is whether one is part of the system in a way which challenges or strengthens the status quo. Privilege is not something I take and which I therefore have the option of not taking. It is something that society gives me and unless I change the institutions which give it to me, they will continue to give it, and I will continue to have it, however noble and egalitarian my intentions."
--Harry Brod, quoted in "Privilege, Power, & Difference."
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I host when I can and surf at every transient opportunity. I've connected with people through couchsurfing to meet-up, potluck, and to learn about new places.
Exploring, arts & crafts, gardening, bicycling, urban/rural treasure hunting, dancing, inciting social change, undoing oppression, reading, writing, scrabble, smelling flowers, sharing engaging conversations, and gathering for potlucks.
Music, Movies, and Books
Movies (a few faves): City of God, Amelie, Delicatessen, Harold and Maude, 8 1/2, Waking Life, Adaptation, Wings Of Desire, The Edukators, Slumdog Millionaire.
Music: A bit of everything - I like any music that makes me want to dance!
Favorite authors: Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, Herman Hesse, Christopher Moore, Naomi Klein.
Books: Zeitoun, The World To Come, Wild Fermentations
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
One spring, I witnessed the ice break up in Dawson City, Yukon. It was phenomenal; the break happened so rapidly with lots of creaking, groaning, and cracking. One minute the river was a solid road of ice, and an hour later it was almost entirely gone! This was particularly thrilling because the residents had been anticipating this moment all winter long and everyone gathered at the riverbank to celebrate.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can bring knowledge of vegetarian cooking. I craft - embroidery, wire wrapping, sewing. I have been strengthening my meeting and workshop facilitation skills.
I am most keen to learning more about cooking, crafting, and community organizing.
